The 8th Annual American Beatbox Championships NYC

The 8th Annual American Beatbox Championships NYC

The human voice is remarkably versatile, able to mimic nearly any sound and create its own extraordinary, inimitable sonic landscape. On the cutting edge of vocal possibility are the devoted artists comprising the global Beatboxing community, a pillar of Hip-Hop culture and a booming industry in its own right. Across November 10, 11 & 12, 2017, hundreds of contestants will gather in Brooklyn to participate in the Eighth Annual American Beatbox Championships, an elimination tournament to crown the best Beatboxers in the USA. Taking place at Greenpoint's Brooklyn Bazaar, the ABC is a popular all-ages competition, garnering hundreds of attendees and attracting millions of views on YouTube and the event's Livestream.

This year, the three-day event will be hosted by World Champion Kaila Mullady & 2016 American Champion Mark Martin, featuring showcases from expert international Beatboxers including The Beatbox House and the competition’s three judges; 3X Chinese Champion Zhang Ze, 2X French Champion Alexinho, and former 2X American Champ & current Vice World Champion NaPoM. #ABCNYC17 will highlight luminaries in the four other elements of Hip-Hop (Emceeing, B-Boy/B-Girl Breakdancing, Graffiti, and Turntablism), including performances by the legendary DJ Marley Marl, 2017 USA DMC Champion DJ Perly, winning emcees from NYC’s most competitive rap battles, and 2-time Grammy winner Rahzel who will be receiving the first annual ABC Lifetime Achievement Award. The battles will begin with open eliminations on Saturday and conclude Sunday when competitors in the Solo, Loop Station, & 2V2 categories determine who will take home $2,500 in cash prizes (courtesy of Speechless Records) and the "Golden Mic" trophies. Attend the event or view via live stream to witness the cutting edge of the human voice. A more detailed schedule of events can be found at the ABC's Facebook event page.

An important element in early Hip-Hop, pioneered by the likes of Doug E. Fresh and others, Beatboxing went underground for years. Now with the advent of YouTube and shareable video, Beatboxing experienced tremendous growth over the last decade, receiving hundreds of millions of YouTube views, featuring in ads for major brands like Microsoft, Clinique, M&M’s and a Bud Light Super Bowl commercial, and regularly appearing on TV shows like American Idol and America's Got Talent. Now in its eighth year, the American Beatbox Championships reflect the growth of Beatboxing as a whole, beginning as a niche event in New York City and evolving into a worldwide phenomenon with participants and viewers from all over the globe.
