Many people complain about how message is often missing n hip-hop. As a fan of “conscious” hip-hop, however, I find that many people who do have poignant messages in their music come off as, well… they come off as boring. The cat’s been let out the bag, but don’t shoot the messenger. Hip-Hop is education, but also entertainment. There takes a certain level of skill to balance message with entertainment value, but when you find an emcee that can: it’s gold. Salomon Faye is that gold.

On his track, 1984, the obviously able lyricist seems to be trying his hand at the mumble rap that has taken attention spans by storm in the past couple of years. The results are favorable to say the least. While not completely mumbling, Salomon’s flow is simplified so that any nodding head can catch it. The gems he inserts into the flow, though? Sheesh. The style is compromised, but not the message. He touches on his unique view on race relations, “Everybody live a lie/ Everybody racing, long as u got a race you identified/  You can miss me with that same Black and White shit/ You can miss me with that rigid state of mind shit/” time, “I been doin this for a minute or a second or a somethin/ But I’m frontin cuz you know that time is nothin/”. This is all in the first verse.

“Tell me how you feel when you fuckin with the Faye/ Don’t I make you feel alive?”
