Brooklyn-bred Devvon Terrell released Weird Sexy Cool earlier this week. The R&B/Hip-hop hybrid album boasts 10 very eclectic songs and is already making a steady climb on iTunes, ending its debut week in the Top 20 albums list.

The album’s first single “Tell You Off" feat. Witt Lowry was released earlier this summer and can likely be credited for the noise Terrell has been making in the underground scene. This debut-track is also undoubtedly one of the strongest on this new release. It’s an interesting and much edgier version of your typical heartbreak story. Witt Lowry’s appearance and fierce flow also adds more bite to this single.

Another strong and notable track is “Way Too Much" featuring Tray Pizzy. This track acknowledges the work hard, and party harder, mentally that coats hip-hop culture. However, Terrell has gives us his own honest take by applying his own thoughts on the wear and tare this lifestyle causes to one’s core. Tray Pizzy was a great collaboration choice for this as his flow is very pointed and direct, also high on the favorite’s list is “Do It For Ya" feat. Raj Gxd.

There were a couple of tracks that felt a bit commercial, not just in their general sound, but also lyrically; “Get On” and “Ride and Boogie”—both felt like standard club jams, though the beat on “Ride and Boogie” is catchy and pretty irresistible.

Devvon Terrell is known for being hands on with this music making. Because he takes so much ownership in his work—its not surprising that there is a consistent specific nature of the topics he speaks to in his music which make it feel very personal. There’s no better way to keep it real than to champion the music-making process from start to finish. No one can argue lack of authenticity when you own it.

Overall, Weird Sexy Cool is a great find—The album is so eclectic and lively that it doesn’t matter how many times you play it, it still feels fresh. On the whole; its lyrics—are more poetic and honest than watered down commercial releases that might “feel” similar. This will inevitably set him apart from his peers---as fans will be able to relate to him on another, more personal level. The production on this release is rhythmic, pleasing, and just “weird” enough it is sure to attract a variety of listeners and his following will continue to grow so long as Devvon Terrell keeps being himself.
