WOLF J MCFARLANE —"PARENTAL ADVISORY"

Interviewed by: Ben Z @WI608

Coming fresh out of the city of Toronto, WolF J McFarlane is quickly making a name for himself through his music and unique style. The flavors he brings stand out among the vastly overcrowded hip-hop buffet of rappers trying to make it. WolF brings a large serving of originality & creativity to your hip-hop palate that you didn't even know you wanted. We here at UHH were fortunate enough to be able to ask him a few questions about himself and his recent video - “Parental Advisory”.

Start off by telling us who you are & where you’re from.

I'm WolF J McFarlane from Toronto, Ontario.

When did you first discover your passion for hip-hop/music?

Well, everybody loves music, but the reason I started rapping was because when I was younger I was with this girl, puppy love kinda thing, and she passed away in a fire wit her with her two brothers. It really hit me hard and I stopped speaking almost entirely for about 2 months. I was considered the class clown amongst my peers, so you can imagine the difference they noticed in me. One day, my brother took me to a studio session and that was my first time ever being in a studio. After watching them record and seeing the whole process of making music, I realized I wanted that to be a part of my life. It made me want to talk again & begin expressing myself through music & rapping.

What/who are you biggest influences?

Life. I take inspiration from everything. Movies, my mom, people I meet, random interesting conversations and things most people may not notice on a day to day basis. Everything around me influences my music.

If you could have the chance to work with any artist living or dead, who would you choose and why?

It's hard for me to pick just one! There's a handful of artists, that if I had the chance, I'd love to just sit down and watch work and really take in their creative process. Andre 3000, Timbaland, Jimi Hendrix, Lil Dragon and The Noisettes to name a few. If I had to choose one to work with though, it'd be Lil Dragon. I find their sound to be phenomenal! They seem so far ahead of where music has developed today and they have a lot of versatility in their sound. I'd love to be in that bubble for a day.

What do you hope to accomplish through your music/career?

I hope that my music becomes successful worldwide. I want to be able to travel & meet people tons of different people. Basically, I want to be a world renown WolF. I want my music to precede me and ultimately, I'd love to be able to be halfway around the world, performing on stage, and be able to cut the music to hear the crowd singing my song. I want to know that my audience can relate to my lyrics as deeply as I did when I wrote them and that people will understand the thought process & intentions behind what I write.

Tell us about the creative process behind “Parental Advisory.”

I went out to the movies and saw 'Project X' and was inspired to write the song. The sample is from a Taz Arnold vote for Obama parody. When making the beat with producer Lord Quest it was hard getting him to embody the feel of the movie since he'd never seen it before, but he managed to create something incredible. 1 year later he finally watched it and was surprised at how well his beat embodied the movie.

What was the most challenging part of creating this song and video?

The biggest challenge in creating the video was coordinating everybody for the shoot. It was shot entirely in 1 day and when you see the scenes of me waking up on the rooftop at the beginning & end, I really was waking up on the rooftop! 6am to 6am... it was a long shoot but everyone had a blast.

What was the most fun part of creating this song/video?

Most fun part of creating this song was performing it for the first time & getting the crowd to chant 'Fuck what yo mama said!'.

As he continues to work on his new album #LYL [Live Your Life] Vol. 2, Wolf J McFarlane grabbed a hold of Grammy-nominated producer LordQuest to release his high-tempo single, “Parental Advisory”, which appeared on Vol. 1 of #LYL.

Under the direction of Tim of IOTA Creative, this video serves as the second visual release from the forthcoming album, following the 2014 release of “Moments”. While the visual captures the energy put forth by WolF J’s music, it also reveals an ideal situation where there should’ve been “Parental Advisory” – but fortunately for Wolf J McFarlane and his team, there wasn’t!
