The stars on the wall outside First Ave boast some of the most legendary names in music near and far, but on May 19th it was about the stars inside as Joey Bada$$ brought the Amerikkkana tour to Minneapolis, Minnesota. With a solid cast of openers in Chuck Strangers, Boogie and Buddy, the night was set for the authentic hip-hop to take over. Nothing against the sing-songy auto-tuned vibe rappers at the forefront nowadays, but sometimes I need someone like Joey Bada$$ to come out and punch remind you of the realness in the realm of life, politics and struggle to stay moral. Having seen Joey open for Logic a year ago, I was excited to see what he would bring as a headliner. I was not disappointed. A DJ stand set up behind a military bunker with his classic Amerikkkan flag hanging behind. Between the police lights, strobe lights and oil barrels the stage added to the message and vibe of Joey's performance. Playing a healthy mix of old and new before completely diving into the Amerikkkan Bada$$ album. From last weekend at Northern Invasion metal festival to this weekend at Joey Bada$$ one thing that was similar was the crowd emphatic response to having 'the guts' to scream “Fuck Donald Trump.” As always, I will be sure to catch every future Joey Bada$$ show that comes to Minneapolis as every time he brings not just a vibe, but lyrics to back it up.
