From the comical laugh to the often polarizing high pitch voice, Danny Brown has stayed true to himself over the years. Staying independent in hopes of maintaining creative control and showing young up and comers what heights that can take you to. In this new era of independent take over, Danny Brown sticks out from the rest because of his original style. Not just from his voice and fashion, but he also sampled everything from Fleet Foxes to Brittney Spears. From Notorious B.I.G to Percy Faith and his orchestra, the samples Danny has taken on truly separate him from the rest.
On a Sunday evening at one of the most notable Minneapolis venues, First Avenue, Danny Brown, Maxo Kream and ZelooperZ took to the stage. The youngest member of the crew, ZelooperZ, showcased the unique style that the Bruiser Brigade brings to the table. Similar to acts like Odd Future, the Bruiser Brigade wants to make every event a party. With a metal concert vibe of moshing and crowd surfer, ZelooperZ wanted to show everyone that the pit isn't just for fans as he pushed his way deep into the crowd to perform a song. Getting his fill he moved to the side of the crowd to finish off his set. He stood on the railings to conduct the crowd to move their hands to his single “Elevators.”
Up next, Maxo Kream would bring his hard style and energetic partner in crime to the packed venue. The Houston native fit well with the crowd's expectations of a Danny Brown show. From his unique flow to the constantly energetic hype man he was the perfect opening act. The simple things from an act can sometimes be the most memorable and that was the case for the lucky few in the front row that fist bump, high-fives and even a hug or two from Maxo as he left the stage off the front of it to end his set.
The night would finish with the leader of the Bruiser Brigade, Danny Brown. His right-hand man, Dopehead, was there to jump start the crowd. After two acts the crowd showed no signs of slowing down. Danny came on stage to pay homage to the famous partiers of his generation in the song “Die Like a Rockstar”. Playing hit after hit from his critically acclaimed XXX album, Danny and Dopehead's nonstop energetic assault was matched by the ever growing moshpits in the audience. He moved into his next album Old with a personal favorite of mine, "Dope Song." Although the album is called Old Danny, he was supporting a new grill. His patented gap in his teeth no longer visible, but his personality still as attention-grabbing as ever. From jogging across the stage to his Gene Simmons tongue impression, Danny's style and energy goes unmatched. Of course the grill wasn't the only new thing Danny brought to Minneapolis. He finished off his set and the night with two singles of his new album coming out this week. The first was a song featuring Kendrick Lamar, Ab Soul and Earl Sweatshirt called “Really Doe”. The song was released in the weeks leading up to the show yet the audience was already fluent in the lyrics, chanting the chorus in harmony. The second, the first released single from the album, was “When it Rains”, a classic Danny Brown hit that would end the set with the crowd begging for more.
