“Oughta be proud of this afro blue/ How they dippin in the culture like it’s black fondu/”
Cultural appropriation may take a backseat to the killings of young, black men, but it’s still a concern that plagues and pains the Hip-Hop community. Brooklyn emcee Clever Best addresses the situation head on.
Over a laid back, Erykah Badu sample produced by Alvie the Skywalker, Clever Best takes aim at the hypocrisy of a system that vilifies a people it adores. He questions whether or not our faith has pacified us in the face of those who kill us “while we was making a killing, they killed us in five cities/ I need Sam Crow to know if niggas gon’ ride with me/”. His frustration peaks in the hook, where he realizes that he will never be enough in the eyes of folks who never planned to accept him. Instead of screaming in anguish, or crying for justice, he seems to find solace in the villain role as he repeats this phrase, almost in humor… “You want nigga, well nigga here now”
“Melanin worth more than gold am I worth it to you?”
