We all know hip-hop started off as a New York thing. However, in a short time, it has grown into a global phenomena. It’s commercialization in the US has a lot of purists saying that the international scene is better than the domestic one. UK emcee Coops could be used to strengthen that argument.

The phrase “god emcee” is not new terminology in hip-hop, but Coops track “Frankincense and Myrrh” takes it to different heights. “I had a dream that I was god when I was 7 years old” the emcee states over a jazzy, golden era type beat produced by Ollie Twist. While the verses are far from that in the Bible, Coops does give us commentary about societal ills “It’s a dark, dark world/ Compared to a livin hell, where demons dwell and freedom failed, just look at the jails” while reflecting on his own personal demons “where’s all my ladies at? Seduction got me lusting/ Still never trust em, how many bitches have I bust in/”.

While it’s definitely a darker tune, Coops manages to handle such heavy subject matter with a unique confidence and charm. “I got a lot to do before my soul leaves, so listen as I proceed” he rap/sings before the hook. Just listen closely.
