Self proclaimed “rap nerd” Drew Famous defies all of the machismo that has defined hip-hop for most of it’s existence with the opening line to his banger “Floating”. That’s not to say the song doesn’t have it’s boasts. The Roanoke, Virginia emcee later boasts “I ain’t got time to slow down, I been lappin y’all, swear I been runnin this town/ I am the talk of the town, I’m a king around here, someone give me a crown/ I might think too highly of myself…” The boasts are more based in lyrical ability and overall intelligence more than street lore and guts and glory. A true student of the new school, Drew admits that he was “obsessed” with the likes of Kid Cudi, Lupe, and Mac Miller since elementary school. If hearing that doesn’t make you feel old, then hearing the young spitter delivering verses with an effortless vigor over a trapped out beat produced by Anatha surely will. Don’t worry, old heads… Drew is not a product of the new “post lyrical rap” trend, as can be seen by his influences. On the contrary, he has legit skill. Seeing that this release is possibly on his 3rd project of 2016, don’t expect the young gunner to slow down anytime soon.
