One can argue that Kendrick Lamar’s rise to superstardom is proof that there is room for a conscious brand of hip-hop in the mainstream. Others could argue that consciousness is the determining factor in “real” hip-hop. Aurora, Illinois emcee ErikMFSosa doesn’t seem like he cares about either sides of the argument, he just has something to say. On “Corruption”, the latest release from his “Growth and Awareness” project, Sosa uses a menacing beat that could be used by your everyday trapper turned rapper. Instead of using the audial canvas to paint pictures of birds, bricks and self destruction, he points his lyrical guns at almost every aspect of this corrupt system (pun intended). From police brutality to misrepresentation in the media, nothing is safe from his wrath with lines like “My people get shot up for crossing the border/ We die in this country, don’t die as a martyrt/ We slaves to this system, we die working harder/ We born on this Earth and they charge us for water/”. Not brash enough? How about “You all yo facts from Fox news, what does that prove/ Information from a bunch of closet racists, full of hatred/”. Ouch, I’m sure Tomi Lahren would take offense…
