Dropping “Liquor Weed & Fucking Often,” Russ created further waves - a confusion of long stories and hooks over simple, heavenly beats. Yet, this self-produced Atlantian has been sure to keep himself undefined dropping four very different tracks this past month alone. “10 Year Freestyle” is authentic and necessary in proving his ability keep it 100, matching what would be classic mixtape undertones. However, “Losin Control” switches back to his definitive sounds, so smooth and slow we’d expect him to be signed onto OVO before we knew it.
Russ combines simple raps, with more complex content through a rap singing flow. The switch up of beats and flows makes promise for a perfect mixtape. An entire project of “Checked” wouldn’t quite cut it, although with “Formula” he does a better job at polishing his longevity. It’s not straight R&B or rap, however it essentially works in the same way of Post Malone’s “White Iverson.” Slow, strung out vocals with less romance, stronger hooks, and range in vocals. Regardless of any predictability or simplicity, Russ isn’t just an artist but leader in progress. Whether bringing attention to personal issues, societal complacency, or the general craziness of the world, he’s always guaranteed to persuade us to take the right path, “I've been wrapped up in myself/I've been living like a mummy/Self belief unlocked the door/On the other side is money.”
