I believe that artists, especially rappers, have a responsible to use their music for more than just turning up a crowd in the club. In the wake of increased police brutality against Black people, hip-hop, which has always been a tool of counter-culture, now more than ever can rally people towards necessary change.
Serge Severe is one of the few MCs that has been able to stand out despite the recent war between Hip-Hop and the Portland police department. With the PPD continuously targeting and shutting down local Hip-Hop shows, it has been difficult for many emerging artists to share voice and their truth. In spite of the pushback, Serge Severe has consistently releasing high quality albums, and touring throughout Europe and the US with the likes of Slum Village and members of The Pharcyde.
Serge's cohort Gen.Erik was also one of Portland's most noteworthy DJ/producers, prior to fleeing to New York and eventually to LA. Since his move, Gen.Erik has been invited to perform at a number of high profile events, including the MLB All Star Game and BCS National Championship. Gen.Erik is also the co-founder of the first annual Dilla Weekend, a three day long festival celebrating the life of DJ legend.
The duo is working on their new video "Say Nothing" features Serge displaying his lyrical prowess over a hard boom bap beat produced by Gen.Erik. Their album is scheduled to be released later this year, and features a whole slew of legendary artists and DJs to be announced soon. Stay tuned.
