[Exclusive] Interview with Jack'N Beats winner Jadon

Most unsigned rappers dream of an opportunity to get in the studio with an award-winning producer, who has a proven track record for delivering hits. For Jadon, a 16-bar verse has helped to make this a reality. The Brooklyn based MC was announced as the winner of the 2015 Jack’N for Beats national competition. As the champion, he’ll receive $10,000 and a studio session with DJ Khaled. He can now add this accolade to a list of victories, as he continues to elevate his career as a hip-hop artist.

Jack’N for Beats hit the road this summer with an 11-city tour, in search of the next MC who would take the national title. Hundreds of unsigned hip-hop hopefuls lined up in each city, for a chance to flex their lyrical skills. Jadon proved his ability on the spot, dominating each round in the local competition. After celebrating his victory as the local winner in New York, he has once again proven his worth, by standing out above the rest of the contestants during voting.

Start off by telling us who you are and where you are from. How long have you been making music?

My name is Jadon. I'm 25, reside between New York and Pennsylvania and am originally from Fairfield, California. I've been making music for 10 years now and have been freestyling heavily for the last five years.

What motivates you to make music? What inspires you?

Life, experiences, family and friends inspire me. So much happens within a day, week, hour, or even a minute, so that is what I speak about in my rhymes and music. My parents and siblings, specifically my younger sister, motivate me to make music. I want her to be motivated to achieve more than her older brother and don't want her to have to survive through the stuff I have experienced, so I work my hard, because I know she is watching as she pursues her career. I think it’s great that there are competitions like Jack’N for Beats, because they motivate me to sharpen my skills and continue to work at becoming the best MC I can be.

Who are some of your idols?

My parents, Jay Z, Citizen Cope, many of the legends of the Harlem Renaissance, and the famous characters that were glorified in Blaxploitation films like Superfly, Coffee Brown and Shaft.

What do you want your fans to take from your music?

I want my music to inspire my fans connect with me and also be able to dance, cry, laugh and experience various emotions, when rocking with my tunes. Competing in and winning Jack’N for Beats has been a blessing, because it gave me the opportunity to reach more fans on a national level.

What do you hope to accomplish in your career?

I hope to use my career and the platforms I use to perform as a way to not only connect musically, but mentally and spiritually with my generation. I have an opportunity to influence a whole culture for the next few decades, so I must stay focused and keep working hard. I’m also looking forward to making a big record with DJ Khaled, so shout out to Jack’N for Beats for the once in a lifetime opportunity.
