There are a few great reasons why you should track who is talking about you online. One major reason is; blogs or media websites could have posted your music and not told you. This is something you want to share with your followers and keep track of. Another reason you should track your mentions is to thank your fans and followers. Show them you appreciate them for posting your music. There are many free services that accomplish this and take less than 5 minutes to set up. Let's start with the most important service.
Google Alerts - www.google.com/alerts
Google Alerts will send you an email anytime your name is listed on any website or blog post if used in a tag. Every blogger uses tags and should include the artists name as one if they post your music. This is a great way to track every blog your music is on. You can also search directly on google by typing your name in quotation marks into the Google search bar.
Social Mention - www.socialmention.com
Social Mention is a great free tool that allows you to search for a term and the results will show mentions of that term on all social media sites. This is probably the most popular search tool because it is free and works great. Make sure to "" around a phrase or else you will be scattered results. Ex. "Upcoming Hip Hop" instead of Upcoming Hip Hop.
Facebook Mentions - Facebook.com/about/mentions
Facebook Mentions will send you an email or text (you get to choose) anytime your exact name is used on Facebook whether the person officially tags you or not. This is a great way to show respect to your fans for posting your music or talking about you positively. I recommend commenting on every post that you are tagged in with a simple "Thank You."
Twitter Search - Twitter.com
Twitter's built in search function works great. All you need to do is type your artist name into the search bar and click 'everything' and then 'all' and you will be able to see anyone who tweeted your exact name. A lot of blogs and websites, like YouTube, don't include your Twitter handle when you use the built in share function. Using Twitter search allows you to see everyone who mentions you.
