There are two things that Hip-Hop doesn’t speak on in great detail: maturity and mental health. Ozone Park, emcee AES Vissle kills two birds with one stone with his latest visual for “Teenage Suicide”. The song was originally released on December 15, 2015… the emcees 21st birthday. While most people (myself included) spend their 21st birthday getting wasted beyond memory, AES used the day to drop some serious introspection over a laid back, boom bap instrumental. The song is to commemorate the death of his teenage years as well as express the frustrations of somebody who wasn’t necessarily prepared to deal with the new found responsibilities of adulthood. “I’m tryna follow fate and save my dollar bills cuz they tryna kill me/ With this student debt, I’m starting to regret/higher education, separation of intellect/ Shouts out to all my children of the internet/ Is it the age of information or the age of lies?/” And such is adulthood.
The visuals, shot by HighLife media, adds another layer to the introspection of the track. We see what is apparently a dual picture of both the realities inside and outside of AES mind. The video starts off pretty normal. We see AES preparing for the day, interacting with his peers and so forth. We are then met with a changeup that shows AES at a train track, contemplating suicide. The song and it’s video are both reminders that we never really know what someone is struggling with internally.
