St. Louis emcee Mvstermind was named as a rising musician to watch by Complex in 2016. While Complex isn’t always the go to source for good hip-hop, they hit the nail on the head with this one. His latest visual “Mali Moolah is a prime example why he was chosen by the magazine. The hook, while catchy, has layers of the W.E.B. DuBois theory of duality in the Black man. The idea of knowing yourself while simultaneously knowing how you are perceived is a theme explained in laymen’s terms, intentional or otherwise. While on a mission to monetize his art, Mvstermind knows how his quest for money may look to others.
“The white folks crackin jokes like it’s dope money/ No, no.. in fact it’s yo money/ Give it to the po’ money/… So much you prolly think I sold my soul money/But I knew my worth since birth, I don’t need no money/”
And such is the complexity of an artist like Mvstermind. While boldly declaring he “don’t need no money” at the hook’s close, the verses shows the frantic life of an artist trying to gain financial stability through his work. While he may not need money for validation. Mvstermind understands that he needs it to survive. “I’m tryna monetize all my endeavors/ I’m seeing dollar signs in all of their letters/ From bill collectors…”. After watching the video shot by award winning director Louis Quartoz, you would be hard pressed to not want to help Mvstermind on his journey.
