Not only do I love hip-hop, I love the culture and what it represents. Before I moved to New York City (the birthplace of hip-hop), I thought I knew a good amount of what the hip-hop culture stood for. Man was I wrong. There is no other place in the world that creates artists like New York City does. Even the most average NY rappers are leagues above others. Every event I go to there is a group of emcees standing in the corner freestyling and a DJ ripping the tables. Every street I walk down, I can see graffiti. Every time I ride the train, b-boys and b-girls are breaking it down. Everywhere I go I'm surrounded by hip-hop and I love it. With all of that being said, a lot of events I go to don't promote the culture. They charge artists to perform and once they do, they leave. NY hip-hop is struggling as a city because artists don't want to collaborate or build a community. Don't get me wrong, there are exceptions to what I am saying. I know a few groups that support each other and they are the ones succeeding in an oversaturated market. It's also hard for artists to find a space or event series who's goal is to help them. That's why we created The Rap Ritual.
The Rap Ritual gives upcoming artists the opportunity to practice their craft and network with each other. Every other week you can expect to see an open mic, open cypher, and featured performers at The Rap Ritual. We encourage artists to freestyle and practice their new songs out in front of an accepting audience. Our goal is to build a community of artists that support the culture and each other. Whether you are an artist, producer, promoter, A&R, or a fan, The Rap Ritual is for you. Come build with us.
First event will be held on June 15th at Funkadelic Studios. RSVP
