Jay-Z has gone on record to say how embarrassed he is to listen to “Big Pimpin” nowadays. I mean, as a married man with a daughter, it must be awkward to hear himself proudly proclaiming “You know I thug em, fuck em, love me, leave em cuz I don’t fuckin need em.” It’s clear Jay has outgrown that part of his career. The beautiful thing about hip-hop, however, is that there is always a younger cat eager to pick up exactly where you left off.

Milwaukee emcee El-Shareef wears his Jigga influence on his sleeves for his latest release. “Big Player”. From the hook that borrows elements from the aforementioned “Big Pimpin” to the first bars of the verse where Shareef spits: “I know nigga tryna buy you: but see me, I wanna fuck for free…” a reference to a Jay-Z lyric from another song: “The Originators Pt.2”. Produced by Derelle Rideout, the country beat hits a lot harder than Jay’s crossover classic of Told. El-Shareef along with Mike Regal share tales of “good ole misogyny” that Mr. Carter once indulged in during the younger days of his career. If you want something to get ignorant to, then look no further.
