TruthCity has never been one to shy away from the visceral. Whether its abject poverty and not knowing where he’s next meal is coming from to selling weed in order to survive, TruthCity has always been vulnerable and fearless with his art.
It stands to reason than that in the wake of police brutality actively targeting Black and Brown bodies, TruthCity calls for a radical defend ourselves against a system that seek our destruction: “Cops is shooting he was dead before he pulled the trigga' / Begged em not to do it, hands up, right before he shoot em / Fuck a march man man it's time to start a movement / Time start a riot, all they understand is violence / all my niggas rob and looting / All my niggas getting suited up / Shoot at them how they shoot at us.” I don’t condone violence against innocent law enforcement, what I do condone, however, is that innocent black lives are given a fair chance…by any means necessary.
Sonically the song is demanding, accompanied by heavy bass, synths, and high-hats permeating the background. The lyrics unabashedly carry the banner of the black struggle in 2016: the rage, frustration, and fear of how fragile black life is and has continued to be. We can beg for our life or we can take it back. It is as the rappers declares “The plan ain't change, I want what u have. This is not a mistake, this ain't happen fast. Niggas this fate, you niggas not safe, hand me crown, nigga I'm back. Hand me my crown, everything black”.
Here TruthCity not only declares the lane he’s carved out for himself, he declares the importance of his life, his worth and the crown he’s made himself. This bulletproof crown.
