New York has always been about that grimey sound. From Mobb Deep to DMX, the grittiness of New York City is what brought my hometown the respect it deserves in the rap community. Some may say that this sound is played out and creates unwanted environments, but I disagree. When you have seen the projects your whole life, this type of music is a way to come up from poverty while paying homage to the roots of Hip-Hop.
Hailing from the Bronx, $ha Hef has been creating some of the best NY-street music for quite sometime. All of his production is dark and LSXXXX captures the mud sound of Uptown, New York without breaking a sweat on "Stain Gang." $ha Hef's wordplay is beastly. He portrays the daily routines of a young kid out the ghetto doing whatever it takes to be successful. $ha Hef released Super Villain last year and it was a certified street depiction of the concrete jungle. All of $ha Hef's music is on repeat for me.
