Behind The Making of "Differences" & Interview With AQ The G.O.D.

Behind The Making of "Differences" & Interview With AQ The G.O.D.

Tell us the story about your newly released video and the concept behind the song.

Well, me and the team originally flew out to Cali for a couple weeks just to chill. However, when I landed I thought about my bro/videographer Don Baptiste who just moved to Cali and we both thought it’d be dope to make a visual for the single. Originally, there was no concept behind the song, I just told myself “aight, just have fun. Don’t focus on a message and don’t try to tell a story, just rap, flow, and try to make a record that people can listen to in any situation”. By any situation I mean that they can listen to it before a basketball game, at the club, or even at the gym. I say that because I have some unreleased records that wouldn't be suitable for the club. Therefore, Difference is special to me because it’s me basically “playing the game”.

What is a typical routine of creation when making music?

My typical routine when creating music is to sit down in front of the mic with my red notebook, vibe out to a beat, and start recording whatever the beat brings out of me. I have my red notebook there for ideas just incase I get stuck or even if I have some rhymes I’ve previously written that I feel will be suitable for the beat i’m listening to at the moment.

How long have you been doing what you’re doing and how did you get started in the first place?

I’ve been making music for 7 years. I started when my bro from High School played a J cole track for me. That’s when I realized that one can actually be a rapper and not talk about the things rappers typically talk about which are money, cars, and women.

If you could choose to work with some of today’s established artists or producers, to move your game to the top, with whom would you like to collaborate?

If I can choose to work with some of today’s established artists or producers to move my game to the top, I would have to say I would love to collab with J Cole, Kendrick, Logic, Bas, Lupe, Drake, & Russ. A producer I would definitely love to collab with is Kanye West.

Which ingredient do you think is most essential in making your sound and style the way it is?

The ingredient most essential to making my sound the way it is, is to not narrow my choice of music to only the hip hop genre. I also listen to a lot of country, r&b, pop music, and even some spanish music because I feel that when you solely listen to hip hop or a specific artist it starts to stick with you and you start duplicating it without even wanting to. Don’t get me wrong, I do listen to a lot of hip hop but I keep my options open to more genres.

In what ways has social media shaped your brand or helped your music?

Honestly, social media has helped me build my brand in a tremendous way. My Instagram has basically been like my website. It is where I post all the events I will be performing at, my videos, and even the place where I go to vent on at times. Social media has probably only helped me with the creation of my music because it helps me stay relevant with what is going on in the world. I can see how people think, the latest trends, what type of music people are looking for, etc.

So, what are your thoughts on the current state of the game?

As a hiphop head a lot of people would expect me to say the game is going downhill. But I choose to differ. On the contrary, I feel like the new era of trap rappers is giving the game a balance, there are just certain songs that we can’t listen to while clubbing. I don’t think anyone can sit here and say the state of hiphop is plummeting when the people at the top of the game are rappers like Drake, Cole, and Kendrick. People know the difference between the real music and the other music. I’m learning to appreciate both.

Most successful point in your career thus far?

I would say i’m at the most successful point in my career now because after years of working solely with my engineer Deyon, we now have a team that is working towards the same goal, we have an in house producer that we’re working with, and I am aware of a lot of events around NYC that I go to perform at.

Any upcoming works or projects that you're currently working on?

My second single will be called Scared To Love and the overall project name will be announced soon.
