During a radio interview with the young artist, the question of the father of her child came up, and it was in that moment that, with grace, she chose not to disclose that personal information. Having no previous connection to her apart from her music, something about this moment struck me. For women, we’re often told we are only as valuable as how attractive we are or how much we can please a man (assuming you are a woman who is attracted to men) or a partner. To be frank, initially, I thought she was just another Dancehall artist, but what Shenseea brings to table, which easily separates her from everyone, is she knows exactly who she is. She is bold and chases after what she wants. At the age of 20, Shenseea is strong, confident, and embolden, just a few of many things that comes to mind when I think of emerging powerhouse. It’s refreshing to see women like who reflect my values and joy for life taking charge of especially in their art.
The Dancehall singer’s hottest single “Loodi” has made incredible waves abroad, amassing well over a million views during the first week of its YouTube release. Now with close to 10 million views, “Loodi” is a story about a young woman recognizing her sensuality and what comes with the kind of power. In the music video, it is important to note how each of the women dancing in the video are in control of their presentation. They dance to love the wild geography of their own bodies. They dance because their bodies belong to them. This one track took hold of the airwaves adding to what is now an impressive repertoire of music. Garnering attention from Teen Vybe Magazine, Shenseea was ranked twice on their Top 10 Chart for both song—#2 “Loodi” and #4 “Jiggle Jiggle”.
This May, I’ll be taking my first trip to the islands, and I know I won’t be able to travel out of the U.S. without this amazing gem of a song. Check it out below:
