[Interview] Juz J Talks Motivations, Favorite Rappers, Local Scene, and More

I had a chance to sit down and talk with Brass Knuckle Gang (BKG) artist Juz J. He is based out of Colorado Springs, Colorado and has been making moves in the local scene for some time now. I wanted to get to know him better so I asked questions that would help me get an idea of what got him where he is today. As you will read below, he has a strong background in music which he attributes to varies family members that are either musicians themselves or involved in the music industry. Juz J started with freestyling, but also gained experience and knowledge through stage managing and hosting at events. Read the full interview below and make sure to check out his music.

How did you come up with the name Juz J?

“I was going through an artist name change and was discussing my options with a friend; my friend told me you’re Juz Jay. Jay is my nickname so it made sense to go with it and turn Jay into J.”

What motivates you to make music?

“Life and learning from memories.”

Who are some of your favorite artists?

"J Cole, Fabolous, Jadakiss, Drake, NF and KYLE. "

How would you describe your music?

“Rap with a touch of R&B, soulful. Old school music with a new school twist.”

What are your plans for the rest of 2016?

“On May 20th I will be releasing a mixtape titled Light Skin Problems. That same day I will be dropping a music video to the single “Light Skin Problems”, which is a single off the mixtape Light Skin Problems.” The night of May 20th Juz J will also be headlining a show at Union Station (Peak 31) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. On the agenda for Juz J following May 20th includes: continuing to promote Light Skin Problems, perform at more shows, release more music videos, work on his upcoming album and setting up future tour dates.

Who have you worked with in the Colorado music scene?

For his upcoming album DJ Cheff Premier will be the featured producer. Juz J has also worked with Chris Leshone, Black Pegasus, J knack, Wreckless County, Stevie G and many others.

What has been your favorite moment in your music career?

“The moment People started spelling my name right on the flyer,” he joked. “People would spell it Jus J or Just J, so it’s good to see the right spelling.” He also mentioned the time when him and Chris Leshone had the crowd lit for the Cam Meekins Show.

When listening to his music you can tell he grew up on the Temptations, Michael Jackson and similar artists; Juz J has a touch of R&B and soulfulness in his music. He creates deeper music that allows you to think about situations, not just his but your situations as well. I’m excited to hear his new mixtape Light Skin Problems; this 16 track project has the potential to put this rising artist on the fast track towards the top. With an ambitious agenda, 2016 should be a big year for this upcoming artist.
