[Exclusive] Interview with Mike Squires - Videographer

Most of you are aware that we are more than a hip-hop "blog" by now so beginning in 2016, we will be interviewing our favorite photographers, videographers, producers, and others. We will be doing this so you can get tips from the experts and learn more about their art. Our first feature is a videographer from the east coast that has worked (and works) with some of the most talented and promising upcoming rappers. Artists such as Witt Lowry, Yonas, Trippz Michaud, and many more. The young film maker has an eye for this stuff and his videos prove that. His attention to detail and quality are refreshing in the upcoming space especially in the hip-hop industry. Below you will his demo reel, top three favorite videos he did, and our interview. Enjoy!

Introduce yourself.

What's up UpcomingHipHop! My name is Mike Squires, I'm from Connecticut, I just turned 20 this past October! I have a strong interest in film, and direct and shoot video! I really love the entertainment industry, so I also produce as well as manage and help develop artists! To sum it up, I really just like creating dope content using different types of outlets

When did you first realize you had a passion for producing video? And why do you love it so much?

Honestly, videos have been something I've always been doing! No matter what my interest was at the time, film was always involved. I really like making content that people enjoy, so it's rewarding when people find pleasure in what I create!

Who are some videographers you look up to?

I wouldn't say there is any particular person who I look up to, but I am definitely constantly inspired by my good friends Hunter Lyon and Jon Kilmer! They keep me motivated for sure!

When did you shoot and release your first video?

I've always been doing videos since I was young, if you dig deep on the Internet, I guarantee you'll find some of my older work! (Haha actually, don't dig, some things are better left in the past 😂)! The first music video I shot was with my homie P.MO, who I went to high school with. The shoot was a remix of Childish Gambino's Freaks and Geeks! Ironically enough I manage P.MO now, so definitely be on the look out for what we have in store!

What camera set up do you use now?

I'm always changing my gear up, but most of my videos are shot on the Canon 5D mk III with the Ronin Gimbal 3-axis stabilizer! As far as lenses I like my Canon 16-35mm L!

How are you able to shoot such crisp visuals at concerts and in low light? What are some settings and tips you can share?

I think a lot of it has to do with getting to know you're equipment and how to use a camera! Some of my favorite shots I have captured during concerts have been with high shutter speeds. In my demo reel, I have a shot of Seven Lions that I'm proud of that used a high shutter.

What software do you use to edit?

Personally I use Adobe Premiere and After Effects, but I used Final Cut for years. It's all preference at the end of the day!

What are some tips you can give upcoming videographers? Things to focus on?

Upcoming videographers should just keep working to be the best that they can be and make sure not to get discouraged! The industry can be tough! Just always challenge yourself to be better than you were yesterday!

Describe your shooting style in 3 words.

Creative. Magical. Inspiring.

What's next for Squires Entertainment?

I have a lot of projects ahead that I'm excited to share with the world! I'll be working very closely with Witt Lowry, to create some next level videos as we take over this year! My manager, Ryan Flanzer and I are working on a project that I feel is going to be special! I'll be traveling and filming a lot! I'll just be focusing on progressing myself and making sure I create the best content possible!
