In America, Hip-Hop fans are caught in midst of a noisy mosaic of trap beats, 808 grooves, poppy fluff, with hints of an underground that moves the culture much like tectonic plates. As the indie culture matures, and with technology the dominant tool, the trappers in Atlanta compete with the middle american backpackers, who work and collaborate with the trademark laid-back west coasters. The metro boomin’ sounds of the urban cities seem to mesh all these movements together like a network of highways. And whilst all this develops on our soil, something magical is happening overseas, especially in the Motherland. It is here where we find the Nigerian rapper MCskill ThaPreacha, as he wraps up another year with an official remix to “The Season”, the lead single off his sixth project, The Season EP (March 2015).

Like the original, the official remix of “The Season” (12/24/15) is produced by Nigeria’s Stormatique. Guest verses come from Malawi’s Dominant1 and Third Eye, the UK’s SHVA-1, Nigeria’s Magic Man, and New York’s own AWKWORD. Teck-Zilla of Nigeria handles the DJ duties. For the laymen, MCskill reps Lagos, Nigeria, while his collaborators come from the quaint little country of Malawi, nestled between Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania. Who knew that if you ventured this deep into central Africa, you could find such hard hitting rhymes over well engineered production.

This record supremely represents the overseas “retro” movement, as foreigners literally find audio refuge in the Dillas, the Wu-Tang’s and boom-bappers of our not to distant past. This first 8 bars has the kind of attitude that reminds me of Buckshot from Black Moon back in the 90s. Every emcee on this remix flow-wise brings a different dimension to the track, yet all touch on motifs of authenticity, freedom and an awareness of where they fit in the global Hip Hop scene. This is definitely a tune for the classic at heart.
