[Interview] Sik Kid Talks Inspirations, Idols, and More

Start off by telling us who you are and where you are from. How long have you been making music?

My name is Sik Kid, I'm an Independent artist born in Chicago but reside in Arizona. I started rapping since I was 7, but start making music at 16.

How did you come up with the name Sik Kid?

Haha this ones simple and kinda funny. I was 15 years old when I decided to buy my first microphone and knew before I would start rapping I would need a rap name! After hours of pulling my hair out thinking of rap names from "Young J" to "Psychopathic" I just took a more simple approach, I thought I rapped "sick" and being that I was only 15, I felt I was still a "Kid" so I just put the two together and "Sik Kid" was born. I just dropped the "C" in sick to stand out more. To be quite honest I don't like my name anymore now that I'm 21, but because my following has grown so much I can't change it.

What motivates you to make music? What inspires you?

Honestly it would have to be my life. I really was cheated on and diagnosed with anxiety & depression. I lived a rough life, not psychically but mentally, and once I layed down my thoughts on a few tracks and saw that I wasn't alone really motivated me to continue to tell my story. Hearing so many people tell me they relate to my music, or helped them get thru tough times & even saved lives has been my biggest inspiration. It's amazing.

Why did you choose hip hop to express yourself? Why not another genre?

I simply love hip hop! I've always loved rapping & was always interested in the complex process of writing a song. I personally feel like it's the best story telling genre out there so it naturally grew on me! I remember back in the day when my parents would leave to work and I'd watch B.E.T behind there back. They didn't like rap music AT ALL, but I've always found a way to slip under the radar and still do It. We laugh about it to this day.

Who are some of your idols?

It would have to be Drake & Eminem! They both have there own reasons. I'm a huge Drake fan because I feel like he's genuine. He's one of the few "Mainstream" artists today who doesn't try to sound like somebody else or fake his story. He doesn't rap about non-sense all the time a lot of his music reflects on his life which I admire! I'm also a huge Eminem fan because when you listen to his music you can feel the emotion & feel what he's saying. You can hear his passion in his voice especially in a lot of his older songs! He's defiantly a huge inspiration on my music!

What is the hip hop scene like in Arizona?

Dead. In the independent world, Futuristic is the only artist from here who's made a name for himself and I couldn't be more proud of his success! There's a few independent rappers who get on the radio now and then and do there thing but other then that not much is happening In AZ. I'm trying to change that.

What is the core message of your music?

To be yourself without fear or doubt, I want people to know its ok to be who you are and not live up to are society's standards. I also want to encourage people to accept their flaws, mistakes and downfalls and turn them into something beautiful... Like I did with music.

What do you want your fans to take from your music?

I want them to take my past experiences and learn from them. I want them to take this is my REAL story and through my struggles I turned my life around and so can they! It's all about being happy

What do you hope to accomplish in your career?

Career wise I'd hope to be the biggest, sell out stadiums & have the number one album out & so forth. But at the end of the day, what I really really really want is to leave a mark on this world. I want people to remember who I am, for all the good I've done...That's what it's all about for me

What's next for Sik Kid?

Welp, I quit my full time job! Haha. But seriously, I quit my job 5 days ago to fully pursue music & that being said, now that I'm giving music my all, I'm working on a new project. This will be an album and I'm going to be versatile on this one! I'm super excited for you guys to hear this! I'm going to pour my soul into each song & make a masterpiece. I hope Yall enjoy It!
